Farm Insurance FAQs
1. Do all farmers need insurance?

It is always advisable for Farmers to take insurance out to protect their business. Working with large machinery, and livestock means that the farming industry can be dangerous, and accidents can happen. If you use a specialist farm or agricultural insurance broker they can provide tailormade Farm Insurance quotes for you, and help advise on the most cost effective way to insure your business and assets.

2. What does farm insurance cover?

Farm insurance typically covers Public Liability Insurance as standard as a minimum, then you could add Employers Liability Insurance to cover Employees and Temporary workers, Environmental Liability Insurance, then add Buildings, Machinery, Livestock and Business Interruption Insurance. A specialist Farm or Agricultural Insurance Broker could advise you on the best way to insure your business and provide a bespoke farm insurance policy.

3. What does farm insurance cover exclude?

Farm Insurance excludes cover for deliberate acts, wear and tear and fraudulent claims. Claims arising from COVID-19 are extremely unlikely to be covered. A farm that has diversified to provide additional income streams will need to be fully disclosed to the insurance company. Diversification that has not been disclosed to an Insurance Company is highly likely not be covered. It is highly advisable to check your insurance policy regularly to check what you are, or are not insured for, and to ensure it fully up to date and meets with your requirements.

4. Do all tractors and agricultural vehicles need farm motor insurance?

If a tractor or agricultural vehicle is intended to be driven on or even across a road, then by law the vehicle being driven has to have Motor Insurance in place that meets at least the requirements of the Road Traffic Act. If you have a number of Tractors or Agricultural vehicles, it is usually more cost effective to insure these on one policy, covering multiple vehicles.

6. Are quad bikes included in the farm motor insurance policies?

Farm Policies motor insurance policies can usually cover Quad Bikes, but these need to be specified individually and note their registration number and or their serial number.

7. What is included in farm motor insurance?

Usually when insuring multiple vehicles on one Farm Motor Insurance policy, the insurer will also cover trailers and machinery that is either attached to the tractor on the three-point linkage or the PTO (Power take off). This cover normally extends to when the trailer or item of machinery is either attached or detached from the tractor and is not currently being used. It is always wise to specify items of machinery that are in excess of £50,000.

8. What is excluded from farm motor insurance?

Drivers who do not hold a correct licence, drivers who are banned and drivers who have excessive penalty points will be usually excluded from cover. Using a tractor or machine for an activity that is excluded, such as demolition etc will usually be excluded from the policy from the outset.

9. Can my farm motor insurance policy cover contractors too?

Farm motor insurance can usually cover your own contracting activities that you may carry out. However, the insurer will need to know exactly what contracting activities you are planning on carrying out. For example, if your tractor is used on non-farming activities this will be looked at differently to tractors being used for contracting for farming purposes.
