"One of the best parts of my job is visiting farms and chatting to farmers about their businesses so I can make sure they have right insurance in place.
It’s also part of my job to make them aware of any threats or risks which could affect their business and suggest ways they can try and combat them.
One of these threats is the recent rise in GPS thefts from tractors, combines, forage harvesters and other machines. This valuable technology is a target for thieves, with police reporting that organised crime gangs are operating in rural areas, specifically targeting GPS devices.
Of course, it’s not just GPS thefts which impact on farmers. Trailers, quad bikes and plant machinery are also a prime target which is why it’s important to protect your property against rural crime. Measures such as installing CCTV cameras and motion-activated lighting, and locking away equipment securely can all act as a deterrent.
For GPS units, if feasible and safe to do so, remove them from machinery and store in a secure location when not in use, or alternatively install tamper proof brackets or lockable cases to machinery. Fitting a tracker to equipment (including GPS devices) can assist recovery if stolen, and mark with SelectaDNA kits or similar crime prevention tools.
It’s also worth keeping a record of tools, equipment and machinery including serial numbers and photos and registering them with the manufacturer, where appropriate.
Always report any suspicious activity or crime to the police."
