Account Executive, Lee Sparrow, who specialises in Property insurance, offers advice on how to ensure your home is kept secure.
"Returning home to find that someone has broken into your property is every homeowner’s worst nightmare; as well as the devastating knowledge that you have lost something valuable, whether that’s a laptop, phone or item of jewellery, there’s the psychological impact of someone invading your space and damaging your property.
At H&H Insurance Brokers’, we understand the impact a break-in can have on people, from the initial shock of discovery to putting things in order afterwards.
We’ll make sure any subsequent insurance claim for the stolen items or the damage caused to your property is dealt with as quickly and efficiently as possible, so that’s one less thing to think about.
For extra reassurance and peace of mind, there are some simple steps which people can take to help prevent burglaries and thefts occurring - these include:
- Using timers at night for lamps or other lights, especially if you are going out for the evening or away from home for a longer period such as a holiday or weekend break. Set them at different times so that they don’t follow the same pattern
- Installing a video doorbell which will display who’s at your door via an app on your phone. These have become increasingly popular in recent years, and are a useful tool if you want to know who’s standing on your doorstep before opening the front door
- Once locked, remove keys from the inside of doors and windows and hide from view. This is because burglars can use equipment or tools from the outside of the house to turn keys which are left in doors or windows, and could also reach through a letterbox to turn a key left in the door
- Do not leave any valuables including handbags and car keys close to the front door
- Let a trusted neighbour know if you are going away on holiday and ask them to keep an eye on anything out of the ordinary
- If you have a home security system, ensure that it is maintained annually so it is in full working order. Test it regularly and ensure that everyone in the house knows how to use it.
