Be prepared for more wintry weather

Back to news

As wintry weather is forecast to intensify this weekend across Cumbria and the North, with snow, ice and more storm conditions expected, farmers and rural businesses are being urged to take proactive steps to protect against potential damage.

Here we issue five clear, practical tips to help rural businesses across the region safeguard their property, livestock and buildings from the potentially devastating impacts of high winds, snowfall and freezing conditions.

Stormy and icy weather can bring significant risks, including frozen water supplies and power outages, structural damage and flying debris, all of which can have serious consequences for farms and rural enterprises.

Drawing on years of experience supporting farmers through storm-related insurance claims, Lisa Newman, our Account Executive based at our Hexham office, has shared the following advice to help mitigate the effects of the severe weather forecast:

  • Protect livestock: Review shelter arrangements for animals, particularly those kept outdoors. Check fencing and ensure contingency plans are in place should power, water or access routes be disrupted by snow or ice.
  • Prepare for power cuts: Consider back-up power solutions, such as generators, to maintain lighting and keep essential equipment running during outages.
  • Secure buildings and equipment: Inspect roofs, doors and windows for vulnerabilities, and ensure loose items such as machinery, feed bins and signage are securely fastened or moved indoors to prevent wind damage.
  • Create a storm response plan: Assign roles to staff, establish clear communication procedures and ensure emergency contact numbers are easily accessible.
  • Review insurance cover: Make sure insurance policies are up to date and provide appropriate cover for storm damage, business interruption and livestock loss.

Lisa said: “The team at H&H Insurance Brokers has extensive experience helping people recover from storm damage, but our priority is always to help businesses avoid these situations wherever possible, as the impact can be extremely disruptive and distressing.

“With snow, ice and strong winds forecast, storms represent a very real risk to people, livestock and property. We would encourage all rural businesses to assess their risks now and take sensible precautions ahead of the worst of the weather, rather than waiting until it’s too late.

“Insurance is about understanding and minimising risk. It’s not just about protecting buildings and assets – it’s about safeguarding livelihoods.”  If you need a quick chat, don't forget you can call us on 01228 406290 or Hexham 01434 622014.
