Winter security checks for your farm

Winter security checks for your farm with security camera

As we head into winter, rural properties and agricultural businesses can become more vulnerable to thieves operating under cover of darkness. Even when we know what we should be doing, good habits can slip. That’s why it never hurts to make sure you’ve got your security sorted.

Theft of farm vehicles such as ATVs and quad bikes remains a common issue. To reduce the risk, store vehicles in a secure, lockable building whenever possible, remove the keys, and ensure they are locked after use.

Make it more difficult for thieves by installing CCTV cameras, intruder alarms and motion-activated lighting. Focus on storage areas, machinery sheds and anywhere else that might be a target such as farmyards and access points.

Fitting tracking devices, immobilisers or forensic marking systems to farm vehicles and equipment will improve the chances of recovering stolen property. Marking machinery, tools and equipment with property-marking products can help identify stolen items.

Diesel, heating oil and fertiliser are an attractive target, especially as rising prices increase their value. Make sure fuel tanks and fertiliser storage areas are properly secure. Check them for signs of theft or tampering.

No one wants to experience the stress and financial impact of having property stolen. If the worst does happen, having the right cover in place can help you get back up and running as quickly as possible.
