Advice for People Making Flood Claims

Back to news

WITH flood warnings in place for parts of the UK, we issue advice for anyone whose home or business is affected by the rising waters.

H&H Insurance Brokers says following some simple steps can help ensure insurance claims for any flood damage are settled quickly and with a minimum of fuss.

Stuart Torrance, Claims Manager, said people should contact their insurance broker immediately after the event, and make a detailed record of any damage caused.  “The impact of flooding can be devastating but your insurance broker will be able to help you through the process of making a claim by drawing upon their years of experience dealing with previous flooding events to help get you back on your feet as soon as possible.

“Once it’s safe to do so, gather together information which will help speed up the process such as listing the damage to your property and belongings, and marking the height the flood water reached in each room.

“Taking photographs and videos of damaged property and items is important, along with noting down as much detail as possible, such as serial numbers, make and model. Don’t throw anything away until you've been told that you can, with the exception of perishable food which will need to be recorded if you are claiming for it. Keep any receipts for work done or purchases made associated with the flood.

“Your insurance broker will get the claims process started by arranging for a loss adjuster to visit your property to assess the damage. If you need to move out of your property, then they can usually help with securing temporary accommodation.”

As Manager of H&H Insurance Brokers’ in-house claims department,  Stuart and his team are the first stop for clients who have been affected by flooding.  He said: “Whether it’s a home or a business which is affected, flooding can be a traumatic event and it’s our job to make sure that our clients experience the minimum of disruption to their lives and their business operation as a result of it.”

H&H Insurance Brokers, which has its head office in Carlisle, operates across the North of England, the Scottish Borders and Wales, and arranges a broad portfolio of business insurance across sectors such as farming and agriculture, tourism and hospitality, construction and all types of rural businesses.
